Why Study in the USA?

Studying in the United States is becoming increasingly popular, with more and more international students, including those from Poland, applying for a place at American colleges and universities. This makes creating a unique application that impresses the admissions committee through its structure, credibility and attention to detail a more challenging endeavor. The key to success and receiving an acceptance letter lies in demonstrating through your application documents that you are ready to embark on the next stage of education and equipped to tackle the future challenges of studying in the USA. A degree from an American institution opens up numerous job opportunities and prepares you for new and exciting ventures in the future.

What Kind of Students Are American Institutions Looking For? Who Has a Chance of Getting In?

American admissions officers seek individuals who take full responsibility for shaping their future and aspire to use their knowledge, motivation, and diligence to make the world a better place. An applicant to US colleges must have an interesting story — institutions look for personalities rather than just exceptional academic records. A high SAT score can help with admission, but it is not the sole determining factor. If you are confident in your strengths, recognize your worth, and at the same time you are not afraid to talk about your imperfections, you will be appealing to admissions officers.

When Is the Best Time to Start Preparing for Studies in the US?

Applying to colleges and universities in the United States is a lengthy process. Therefore, it is recommended to start preparing in the first and second years of high school. Alternatively, you can start at the beginning of the third year, but this may mean you will need to take a gap year before starting your studies. Preparing for the SAT alone takes at least six months, assuming your level of English allows you to understand formal texts in the reading section and you have solid math skills.

Depending on your capabilities and needs, the experienced team at Avy College will create a tailored program and plan individual components of your application to comprehensively prepare you for studying abroad.

What Are the Application Deadlines for Studies in the US?

The application process in the United States begins a year before starting your studies, meaning that you will apply during the first half of your fourth year of high school.

American colleges and universities have two application deadlines: early action and early decision, which are usually due in early November, and regular decision, which generally is due at the end of December or the beginning of January. Please note that application deadlines may vary by institution.

Application essays are a crucial part of the application process in the United States. For instance, if you choose ten universities and each requires three essay responses, you’ll need to write 30 essays. The length of these essays varies, with word limits ranging from 50 to 150 words. If you plan to apply to top-tier universities such as Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, or Yale, your essays should stand out and include information that will appeal to admissions officers—they have to create a “wow effect”.

A personal essay is the most important application essay and an essential part of the application process for American colleges and universities. Essentially, this essay is designed to give admissions officers a deeper insight into who you are. It is an autobiographical piece in which you present yourself and share a story from your life that has greatly influenced and shaped you. This type of essay is not typically emphasized in the Polish curriculum. A key characteristic of the essay is its informal nature—it should focus on your past experiences, dreams, and future aspirations rather than just achievements and grades. The essay should be between 400 and 600 words.

You need to submit your application documents through the application systems. One of the most popular systems is the Common App. It is quite complex, with many sections that need to be filled out with the required information. The Common App opens on August 1st every year—this means that you have time to submit your documents from that moment until the application deadline for your college.

Getting a high score on the SAT often requires proper preparation. The SAT is different from any other tests you may have taken. It doesn’t assess your knowledge but focuses on skills such as critical and quick thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning. A score of 1500/1600 is considered high (check out our tips on how to score 1500+ on the SAT). However, this doesn’t mean that a college won’t consider your application if your score is below 1500. Every element of your application is important, and only when these “puzzles” fit together will you achieve your goal.

Applying to study in the US requires significant commitment, and you should start preparing at least six months before the application deadline. In the US, there is no limit to the number of colleges you can apply to—you can submit your application to as many as you like. However, due to the number of additional documents and application essays required, it is worth carefully considering how many colleges you apply to: instead of applying to twenty, it might be better to choose ten. This way, you can ensure that your application is well-prepared, giving you a realistic chance of being admitted.

You will need several drafts of your essay—the essay should be well thought-out and follow a specific plan. Essays written on the fly or by someone else will not bring the expected result. Your essay-writing process should be organized: you should focus on essays for one college at a time and ensure that the information in the texts is not repeated. You should aim to develop a system that allows you to work as efficiently as possible. While the topics may seem simple, how you present them will greatly impact your success. Perfecting your essays will take about 4-6 months.

In addition to the Personal Essay and supplemental essays, colleges will ask for additional documents such as a School Profile, Transcript of Records and Letters of Recommendation. If you plan to apply for art-related programs, you will also need to submit a portfolio of your work. Since you will be studying in English, you have to provide a language certificate that confirms your proficiency in English, both spoken and written. Popular tests accepted by US universities include TOEFL and IELTS. It is important to check the specific requirements of the universities you are applying to, as they may vary.

Some colleges no longer require to submit SAT scores, but top-ranked institutions like MIT, Brown University, Dartmouth College, the University of Texas at Austin, and Yale still require SAT or ACT scores. It is important to note that standardized test scores are often an optional part of the application. However, if you are given the option to submit SAT scores, you should take the test to increase your chances of being accepted.

The US college application process is one of the most demanding in the world. When all these tasks—essay writing, document preparation, intensive exam study, along with school, tests, and extracurricular activities—start piling up, it can be difficult to manage everything and achieve expected results. Taking a gap year allows you to focus solely on the application process and strengthen your application through volunteer work and language activities.
